What Should You Do with Your Pond Pump in the Winter

In the spring and summer months, an outdoor pond is a great way to accent the backyard and add ambiance. In order to make sure harmful algae doesn't overtake the pond, a pond pump is often used. However, what about the winter months when the weather is cold and the temperature is below freezing? Should you run your Tsurumi pond pump then?

The truth is that there isn't a single answer here, and it will depend on your individual situation. First and foremost, you have to consider where you live. If the area where you live usually sees warmer temperatures in the winter, it is usually safe to keep the pond pump running in the wintertime.

However, if the temperature can get below freezing at any time, there is a danger that running the pond pump in the winter can cause it to become damaged permanently. And Tsurumi pond pumps are not cheap.

Still, there might be times when you need to run your pond pump in the winter even if the temperatures do get below freezing on a constant basis. If this is the case, there are some things you can do prevent the pond pump from being damaged beyond repair.

One of the main reasons why you would need to keep the pond pump running is because you have aquatic life in your pond. You will need to keep the water warm enough so they can live. When there is ice, the gas buildup underneath it can be toxic. That's why you should do everything possible to prevent ice from forming in the first place.

You can prevent this by pouring warm water that is dechlorinated over the ice. This will ensure the pond doesn't completely freeze over. Monitor the pond daily to make sure you stay ahead of the issue and protect your Tsurumi pond pump.
