Proper Sump Pump Wiring

Moving to a new home can be overwhelming, especially if it is known for having water problems in the basement. Water enters home in multiple ways, with the most common being during storms from poor drainage outside and the other being groundwater that seeps up through the concrete. If you need to install a sump pump in your new home we will discuss the proper wiring for doing so in this post.

If you are moving forward with the installation of Tsurumi pumps, you will need to know how to install the wiring so no electrical issues occur. You will also want to know what to look for when you have an electrician come in to perform the work. There’s nothing wrong with double-checking their work to ensure it is being done correctly. It is your house.

The installation of a 20 amp pump requires a #12 gauge circuit. You will want to make sure that the sump pump is protected from power outages and shorts. This can be done by installing a GFCI outlet or GFCI circuit breaker. There also needs to be a disconnect for the sump pump that is easily seen by anyone. The disconnect must also be within reasonable reach should the pump need to be disconnected in a moment’s notice.

When installing a receptacle outlet for the sump pump you will need to use a weather-proof cover. This cover helps to protect the outlet from the weather, even if it is indoors, while the sump pump is plugged into the outlet. As with all wiring projects it is best to have the work performed by a licensed electrician.

The information presented here is not exhaustive. It’s best to consult with the pump manufacturer about electrical requirements for the pump you choose for your home so you can relay that information to your electrician.
